A Cold Home Opener for Vandy's Boys of Summer

Pedro Alvarez's conspicuous absence from Vandy's lineup is apparently due to a broken bone in his right hand sustained during his first at-bat of the season against Oregon State last Friday in The DeMarini Invitational in Tempe, AZ. Awesome.
Alvarez finished the game and the 'Dores dropped the defending back to back National Champ Beavers 8-1 due to some serious slugging by SS Ryan Flaherty(2-4, 4RBI). The 'Dores went 1-1 in their final two games losing badly to host team Arizona State 18-6 and coming from behind to defeat Miami of Ohio 4-3. Andrew Giobi (1-3), Aaron Westlake(0-1) and Brian Harris(0-1) filled in for Alvarez at 3B against Arizona State and Brad Gschwind(0-4) played on the corner against Miami(OH).
The 'Dores played their home opener this afternoon with temps in the high 20's at Hawkins Field against The University of Evansville. Caleb Cotham made his first start as a Commodore going 4 innings facing 16 batters giving up 5 hits, no runs, 2 walks and recording 3 strikeouts. Cotham picked up the save against Oregon State last Friday throwing 3 innings of no-hit ball. Alex Feinberg manned 3rd base for the 'Dores. The 'Dores took a two-run lead into the top of the ninth, but were unable to close the game out as The Aces rallied for two runs to send the game into the bottom of the 9th. Brad French struck out swinging, and Jose Macias doubled to center before Johnathan White drove him in with a single to right center field to win the game. Russell Brewer got the win for the 'Dores facing 4 batters in 1 inning of work giving up 1 hit and striking out 1. The game went for 3 and half hours and the attendance was 224.

Go 'Dores!

I was more than a little surprised to see that this game was played.

I cannot wait to sit my butt in row 3 when the Dores play this weekend!
