The Ramblings and Ruminations of a Vanderbilt Undergraduate from Franklin, TN

Thursday, February 28, 2008

I started this blog for a myriad of reasons. Naturally, I enjoy writing, and I enjoy sports, so it made sense for me to put those two together and write about sports. I also like blogging because it's like journalism without rules.

Speaking of journalism without rules, Jarred Amato, Editor in Chief of The Vanderbilt Hustler (the official on campus "news"paper) was relieved of his duties by The Vanderbilt Student Communications Board. It was discovered that Amato falsified results for a "Who's Now" piece in the sports section in which readers were encouraged to vote for various Vanderbilt athletes in order to determine who's had the most success on and off the field. Apparently rather than admitting that it was a stupid idea to rip off an already stupid idea from ESPN, indicated by the apparent lack of participation among the alleged "readership" of The Hustler, Amato attempted to save face by simply making up the results.

Sadly, I don't think you could find anyone who:
A. Knows that The Hustler even ran a Vanderbilt "Who's Now"
2. Really cares
III. Will cease to read The Hustler because of this incident. This is primarily due to the difficulty of finding anyone who read The Hustler in the first place.

and now we have the BCD "Good Call, Bad Call" brought to you by Miller Lite

...not really. I have better things to do than be completely unoriginal in my sports reporting...ahem.

Nothing personal against Amato. Don't know the guy. As a fellow journalist it's a shame to see someone have their reputation tarnished by something so ultimately insignificant. Maybe it's time The Hustler decided to quit trying to be something they're not and just write a decent story every once in a while.

As always,
Go 'Dores!
